CAPE BRETON – The Savoy Theatre and its Executive Director Pam Leader today announced the world premiere of My Bonnie Lass, a musical written by Platinum selling recording artist Johnny Reid, in the spring of 2021. Two performances of My Bonnie Lass are scheduled to take place at the Glace Bay, NS theatre on May 9 (Mother’s Day) of next year.
Co-written with Toronto playwright Matt Murray, and based on the true story of Reid’s grandmother Maggie, My Bonnie Lass chronicles the life of a working class mother of three, in postwar Lanarkshire, Scotland. When tragedy strikes and Maggie’s world is turned upside down, she must rely on her strength, her sense of humour, and above all, her loyal group of friends to pull her through.
Tickets for My Bonnie Lass go on sale to the general public this Wednesday, May 13t h at 9am local time via the Savoy Theater box office and at tickets.savoytheatre.com. A pre-sale for members of Johnny Reid’s Tartan Army fan club will open this Tuesday, May 12t h at 9am local time.
Due to the current uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, and in order to comply with current social distancing measures, only 50% of the theater’s seats will be made available for each performance during this initial release of tickets.
100% of proceeds from this initial release of tickets will be donated to The Canadian Red Cross’ Stronger Together Nova Scotia Fund in support of families of the victims of last month’s tragic events until Friday May 22nd at 11:00pm AST.
The announcement of the Mother’s Day 2021 performances comes earlier than originally planned, as Reid wanted to give the community of Cape Breton something to look forward to during extraordinarily difficult times.
“Whenever I visit Cape Breton I’m reminded of where I grew up in Scotland,” says Reid. “The rolling hills that lead you to the ocean, all the good hearted, hard-working people who take time to simply say “Good Morning”, its Celtic culture and the fact that coal mining once fueled its economy. For all these reasons The Savoy Theatre is the perfect place to debut My Bonnie Lass and introduce my Gran’s story to the east coast. I want to continue to give back to the people that have always supported me and welcomed me with open arms. “
“This turn of events was such a welcome treat!,” said Leader of the opportunity to debut the musical. “I have been bursting to tell people since we began discussions months ago. Johnny is moved by the beauty of our island and is passionate about using our theatre as the backdrop to his compelling story. We needed this kind of a good news boost. It will give us all something to look forward to and to work towards!”
My Bonnie Lass is a love letter to Reid’s Grandmother and all the women of her generation. It is a celebration of the human spirit, the power of a mother’s love, and the way these women always made the most out of life even when they seemed to have nothing.
Over an illustrious career spanning more than two decades, JUNO Award winning singer-songwriter, Johnny Reid has captured the hearts of fans and audiences around the world. The critically acclaimed singer is widely known for his lyrical honesty and musical ability, as demonstrated by an extensive catalogue of hit songs, album sales totalling over 1.5 million units in Canada, countless awards and multiple sold out national arena tours.
My Bonnie Lass was originally workshopped in 2017 as part of Sheridan’s Canadian Music Theatre Project (CMTP), an international centre of excellence for the development of new musicals. Since the program’s inception in 2011, 24 shows have been incubated and continue their development. Five of these shows have enjoyed professional premieres, including Come From Away, which opened on Broadway in 2017, receiving a Tony Award for Best Direction and a nomination for Best Musical.
